Careers Stories: Niamh Kelly, HP

Niamh Kelly found it difficult to choose between her favourite subjects at the end of school, but found a rewarding career in HP.

Niamh Kelly loved Chemistry and Music when she was in school, but has no regrets about choosing science at third level.

“I liked logical subjects like Maths and Science in school but I also loved music. I was torn between Chemistry and Music which is kind of a funny mix. I thought that choosing science in college would keep more options open as I could keep music as a hobby – I was never going to have Chemistry as a hobby.”

Career Stories: Bryan Hyland, HP

Bryan Hyland says he didn’t really know much about what he was choosing when he applied for third level, but realised in first year at DCU that he was on the right track.

“I was always involved in sport. As a young lad, I wanted to be a footballer in the premier league. Fairly quickly, I realised that that wasn’t going to happen so I had to sit down with my parents and talk to them about what I liked doing – and what I was good at.”

Bryan’s favourite subject was Maths. He didn’t have transition year in school, so he had to choose his subjects for Leaving Cert early on.

“The subjects I picked were not really engineering-based at all. I picked French, History, Business and Biology. People can’t believe it now, when I say I do engineering, that those were the subjects I picked going into Leaving Cert.”
